Pursue Your Passions and Explore New Ones

Opportunities abound to keep on enjoying the activities you love, while finding new hobbies and interests.

Hobbies and Interests

Saint Luke’s Bishop Spencer Place is bustling with opportunities to do as much or as little as you choose. We empower our residents to use their fields of expertise, experience, interests, and talents to share with other residents. With the assistance of resident connections and community volunteers, our Life Enrichment Director has created diverse and culturally engaging programs for our residents to enjoy.

Each month we publish The Ambassador, highlighting what’s on tap at our community, including separate calendars for independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Sign up to receive The Ambassador.

Fitness

The Bishop Spencer Place Fitness Center boasts cardio-training equipment and free weights, and we host a variety of fitness classes in the adjacent Activity Center.

We have partnerships with several nearby fitness centers, including the Kirmayer Fitness & Aquatic Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kirk Family YMCA, The Foundation, Chiefs Fit, and Garrison Community Center. Residents receive a monthly stipend to use towards a fitness facility membership.

Gardening

Bishop Spencer Place residents have many opportunities to continue cultivating their gardening talents. Our Bishop’s Garden is a formal oasis tucked in our courtyard. Thank you to Jonathan Kemper and the William T. Kemper Foundation, who funded the creation of the Bishop’s Garden.

Members of the Garden Committee take an annual trip to a local nursery and garden center to select flowers for our Memorial Garden, and they also manage the herb garden. There you’ll find mint, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, dill, sage, and more–all available for resident use. Our chefs love grabbing fresh herbs from the garden!

Within the garden, there are several raised 8’x6′ garden beds which can be reserved for personal plantings.

Art and Culture

Our prime location near the city’s leading cultural venues lends itself to a host of cultural opportunities, with regular educational outings to museums, performances, botanical gardens, and landmarks, as well as trips to the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Library and Plaza Branch Library for their frequent presentations, speakers series, and literary readings.

Volunteering

We have a diverse group of residents who appreciate the opportunity to share their time and talents in giving back to the community. There are many opportunities to volunteer in the neighboring community or within Bishop Spencer Place. Residents serve on one of many committees including dining, garden, life enrichment, and building and grounds. Our community librarian is a resident who volunteers her time, and a group of residents helps our chaplain prepare programs and our on-site chapel for weekly services.

We have residents who volunteer at nearby Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. One resident serves as a baby cuddler in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
